Why you need a COI for your next Rental

Whether you’re throwing a party or shooting a music video there is always a chance something can go wrong. With this margin of error comes high responsibility– a Certificate of Insurance (COI) protects not only the studio, but you as well in the event someone gets injured or something gets broken. 

What is a COI?

A COI is a document issued by an insurance company that shows evidence of an existing insurance policy. It is important for rental spaces to also see this proof of insurance as it assists in risk management and takes the rental house's name out of the picture if anything is to happen during the event. 

Just like a landlord needs to see your insurance, so does a production studio. 

How do you get a COI? 

Certificates of Insurance, although they sound daunting, are fairly easy to acquire. There are two ways to do so. 

‍Call your insurance company

If you already have insurance or your production company does this is the simplest option. However, before you pick up the phone there are a couple things you need to know beforehand:

• What should the coverages and minimums be?
• Typically we recommend the coverages be a minimum of $1,000,000 to ensure you are fully protected in case of an emergency.
• What is the Production Studio or Rental House's name and address?
• When obtaining a COI for a production we ask that you put the certificate holder in the name of the company you are renting space from, in our case the information would be as follows:

If you are not renting from us, your production studio should be able to help you determine their requirements.

Online

If you are throwing a party or not associated with a company your minimums might not meet the requirements. If so, the online process might be easier for you, there are several websites such as Biberk and nextinsurance that allow you to obtain a COI in just a couple minutes. After a simple Google search “How to get a COI” you can click on a reputable company and follow the prompts in order to obtain it instantly. Some companies we recommend are as follows:
